Elephant&Castle® opened its first North American pub and restaurant in 1977 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. E&C's distinct atmosphere and selection of popular British Classics made it an instant success! E&C's combination of British Classics and North American favorites coupled with an extensive beer list and collection of Scotch whisky has made E&C the favorite neighborhood pub and restaurant in North America to eat, drink and enjoy!
Today, E&C has grown to over 20 restaurants across the United States and Canada from Toronto, Boston, and Chicago to Vancouver, San Diego, and San Francisco. This record of 30 years of stability and success is due to E&C's continued commitment to be the standard of what North American consumers demand of a British pub and restaurant concept - Bang On Food, Bang On Drinks, and Bang On Service!

The Legend of E&C
Around the 14th century, Charles I was betrothed to a Spanish princess from Castille. She was known as "Infanta de Castille". Then, as now, the royal family’s activities were subject to gossip in all the pubs and inns across the land. In addition, the Cockneys of London, who had no bilingual training, had problems with the Spanish language. It was not long before Infanta de Castille had become mockingly known to commoners of the day as “Elephant&Castle.” At the height of this calamity, an enterprising innkeeper decided to name his establishment after the young woman, thus creating the first Elephant&Castle Pub. In jolly old England this original Elephant&Castle Pub still operates in London today. Until the next time you visit England, enjoy the Bang On Food, Bang On Drinks, and Bang On Service you’ll experience at an E&C nearest you!
